Learn how medtech companies can leverage resources for product development from consortium members Inertia and Megalab Group Inc.

Insights into the Medtech journey with Inertia and Megalab Group Inc.

A Recap from the July Hamilton Health Innovation Check-up

What if you could streamline the complex process of turning a medtech idea into a certified, market-ready product? Bringing a new medical device to market requires understanding a process that spans from initial product design to rigorous regulatory testing. At the July Hamilton Health Innovation Check-up, we heard from two key ecosystem partners, Inertia and Megalab Group Inc., who are helping innovators confidently navigate this path.

Inertia’s approach to scalable hardware

Zindzi Morris-Alleyne, Manager of Partnerships at Inertia, shared her insights on how startups can build scalable hardware and reach “impact.” As a contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), Inertia offers a three-in-one approach—integrating strategy, design, and manufacturing under one roof. This single-team model requires less redo, less time, less capital, and fewer headaches.

Over the years, Inertia’s team has noticed a clear pattern: the medtech ventures that succeed tend to focus on achieving three key outcomes:

  • Proven demand: Will people want to switch to this new product?
  • Launch certainty: Do we have the best team and methods to successfully launch?
  • Effortless scaling: How can long-term profitability be built into the product from the start?

Zindzi emphasized that the most successful scale-ups get several things right: they define their regulatory path early, focus on a sharp MVP to avoid “feature bloat,” and build a real plan for profitability from the beginning.

As a proud partner of Innovation Factory’s CAMEDA Program (Canadian Medtech Alliance), Inertia helps companies accelerate development and reduce costs. Zindzi summed up the program’s value by asking, “What’s the value of that acceleration? What does it save you in burn? What does it save you in team focus? What does it save you in terms of opportunity costs?”

Avoiding certification roadblocks with Megalab

David Bell, Partner and Sales Manager at Megalab Group, shifted the focus to a critical stage of the medtech journey: testing and certification. As a “one-stop solution” for testing, Megalab offers a comprehensive suite of services that are often a mystery to new entrepreneurs.

David outlined the different types of testing required for hardware companies, including Electrical Safety, EMC/Radio Testing, Environmental Testing, and Packaging Testing. He stressed the importance of thinking about standards throughout the design process, noting that, “90% of the time people are making the same mistakes.”

The key to avoiding these costly errors, he stressed, is pre-compliance testing. As David put it, “If you’re gonna take one thing from the presentation, this is it. Do pre-compliance testing. It’s a tiny bit of money upfront, but it saves you time and money in the end.” This early-stage testing identifies potential issues before it becomes a major setback, ensuring that the product is designed for success from the start.

David also acknowledged that the current funding landscape is challenging, stating that, “it’s just going to be harder than it was in the past.” However, he offered an optimistic outlook, noting that medical device standards are largely harmonized globally, making it more feasible for Canadian companies to expand internationally than for other products.

The insights from both Inertia and Megalab underscore a critical message for all medtech entrepreneurs: preparation and strategic partnerships are key. Working with experts from the start can help you navigate complex regulatory standards, avoid costly mistakes, and build a product that is not only innovative but also market-ready and scalable.
