Promises and Challenges of Direct-to-Consumer Laboratory Testing

September 11, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Presented by: Dr. Guillaume Pare, Professor, Pathology and Molecular Medicine and Goran Calic, Assistant Professor, Strategic Management.

The age of information has brought unprecedented potential to empower individuals with health information, whereby each patient can make informed decisions about health choices based on accurate and accessible biological data. However, patient-driven laboratory testing has not yet changed prevention nor treatment of late-onset diseases. From recreational genetics to direct-to-consumer diagnostic testing, many factors contribute to barrier to adoption, such as lack of consumer information, need for scientific validation, regulatory void, and need for actionable information. Highlighting these challenges is the myriad of companies offering such services, leaving consumers confused about the quality and implications of testing. Dr. Pare will be discussing his experiences with three laboratory testing ventures, with an emphasis on both the promises of patient-driven testing, but also commercial and regulatory challenges.
