Health innovation celebrated during weeklong showcase in Hamilton

A showcase of health innovation taking place this week in Hamilton isn’t just about highlighting the research and creations of local practitioners.

It’s also a chance to display the city’s growing confidence and capacity when it comes to its life sciences cluster and connect those working within it, according to the director of Synapse Life Science Consortium.

“I think we’ve spent a lot of time just putting our heads down and doing the work,” said Alex Muggah, who heads up the not-for-profit organization for the city’s life sciences cluster.

“What we’re discovering is it’s OK — and in some cases really important — to put our heads up and to pat ourselves on the back and to tell others what’s happening here because we’re ready and able and interested in working with companies and organizations across Ontario and around the world.”

Hamilton is home to more than 35,000 life science professionals, and the health sector is the city’s largest employer.

Hamilton Health Innovation Week, which launched Monday and runs through April 29, is bringing health care innovators to the city for a variety of events and programs, ranging from a workshop on accessing the U.S. market to a three-day hackathon.
