Caro Meats have devised a way to make meat by stacking thin sheets of cultivated muscle and fat cells grown together in a lab setting. The technique is adapted from a method used to grow tissue for human transpants. The cells produce a fibrous texture by forming myofibres as the fuse with each other, incorporating fat cells in the tissue directly. As a result, it feels and tastes just like meat.

Adoptive immunotherapies to address treatment-resistant forms of cancers
Tags
The engine behind Empirica is a powerful functional genomics platform combined with unique patient-based models of brain cancer and recurrence, which are enabling the discovery of new therapeutics options that have emerged from the patient’s actual tumour biology. The company is focused on the development of adoptive immunotherapies against the most aggressive and treatment-resistant forms of cancers, including glioblastoma (GBM) and brain metastasis (BM).
Empirica Therapeutics was founded in July 2018 by Dr. Sheila Singh, a pediatric neurosurgeon, and Dr. Jason Moffat, an expert in functional genomics and gene-editing platforms.
The first product in Empirica’s preclinical pipeline is ET001. ET001 is based on genetically engineered T cells with chimeric antigen receptors that specifically bind to a CD133 antigen to recognize and kill the cancer cells. The Empirica team has validated CD133 as an essential marker of therapy-resistant GBMs and developed ET001 that targets the treatment-refractory disease reservoirs, showing great preclinical efficacy against GBM recurrence. This potential therapeutic could also be trialed in patients with brain metastases that also express high levels of CD133.

You Deserve a Better Toothbrush
Tags
Hi, I’m Simon.
I created Nada for 3 reasons:
1. Billions of plastic toothbrushes are thrown away every year, ending up in landfill or our oceans.
2. Disposable, plastic toothbrushes are badly designed, unhygienic and ugly.
3. Taking better care of our teeth should be simple.
So in 2016 I started working on Nada (originally called Grin). My idea was to create a toothbrush that was both sustainable and beautiful.
The result is a beautiful, hygienic toothbrush that we know you’ll love. Oh, and it just might be the most sustainable toothbrush on earth : )
Thanks for considering Nada.

Decreasing surgeon’s response time to potential complications
Tags
NERv Technologies aims to create a paradigm shift in post-operative care, utilizing the plethora of data within the body, to help in the detection of post-operative complications at their onset. NERv’s platform sensing technology augments existing wound drains and catheters, providing healthcare providers with a smart monitoring tool that can enhance the delivery of care. NERv’s technology is being built with the goal of decreasing surgeon’s response time to potential complications, making patient recovery easier, and hopefully saving lives.
For patients undergoing general surgeries, the worries are not over once a surgery is complete. Complications, such as leaks, bleeding, and infection, can occur during recovery. These complications require a timely response to prevent serious damage or death. In some cases, it can take 2-3 days to detect, which is sometimes too late.
We developed a Smart Catheter System that can actively monitor patient status, analyze what’s happening inside the patient, then reliably report the data to the surgeon.

A New Way to Grow 3D Complex Tissues with Ease

OrganoBiotech pioneers platform technologies that allow users to model complex biology with ease and without compromising experimental throughputs. We develop and sell a tissue culture platform (IFlowPlate™) used to grow stem cell-derived organoids with blood vessel networks to make more predictive pre-clinical models for drug discovery.
At OrganoBiotech, we understand that studying human biology and validating new medicine are complex endeavors. You need to build confidence in your discovery with models that recapitulate the complex biological process found in the human body. Our proprietary IFlowPlate platform technology allows users to model complex biology with ease and without compromising experimental throughputs so that you can focus on your discovery. Our IFlowPlate technology is supported by multiple scientific publications in Advanced Materials, Lab on a Chip , and ACS Biomaterials and Engineering
Organoids are miniaturized organs grown in a dish over time from a single or a small cluster of human stem cells. Organoids have a biological complexity that resembles the natural human organs and can offer valuable insights into the function of drugs, the mechanism of disease progression, and the process of organ development that cannot be provided with existing pre-clinical models. However, all existing organoid systems lack perfusable blood vessel networks. Blood vessels are the most prevalent biological structures in the human body, and all organs rely on them to function correctly. They are also closely associated with diseases and immunological responses. To solve this problem, we developed a platform technology (IFlowPlateTM) that can be used to grow blood vessels around various organoids to make more predictive human tissue models for drug screening and fundamental biological research.
Collaborators include Sigma, GSK, and Merck, among others. OrganoBiotech, Inc. is a startup company from McMaster University, and is active across Southern Ontario

Addictive disorders, such as alcohol use disorder, nicotine dependence, illicit drug addiction and pathological gambling, are among the most widespread psychiatric disorders in Canada and around the world. Approximately one in five Canadians experience addiction over their lifetime. Addictive disorders commonly co-occur with other psychiatric disorders, such as mood disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder, and are major contributors to cardiovascular disease, cancer, sexually transmitted diseases and accidental injury and death. In economic terms, addiction has an estimated annual burden of $40 billion. In human terms, the toll addiction takes on those who are afflicted and their loved ones is incalculable.
The Peter Boris Center for Addictions Research is a joint collaboration between McMaster University and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton to advance the scientific understanding of addiction. Located at the St. Joseph’s West 5th campus, the state-of-the-art Juravinski Centre for Integrated Healthcare, the centre serves as a nexus for faculty in McMaster’s Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Neurosciences and collaborators at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and Homewood Health Centre. Although the interests in the centre are diverse, our collective goal is to conduct innovative empirical research that pushes the boundaries of new knowledge and bridges the gap between science and practice.

World's first data-driven electronic health record system
Tags
Primary care physicians are frustrated by electronic health record technology that is currently available due to there being too much administrative effort required to maintain the record, as well as organizational and interoperability problems which impede their ability to engage with patients. Additionally, these physicians feel that the current EHR systems that are available have poor usability and do not provide options to utilize new computational techniques in their practice, seamlessly, without having to enter redundant information into multiple systems. Our product is the Precision Medical Clinics application. Using the application, which captures inputs to the system in an analyzable format, data acquired during the patient visit can be harnessed to provide automate processes, give decision support, and integrate precision medicine insights into a physician’s practice. Our application will reduce physician overhead costs, reduce time spent on administrative tasks, improve the physician user experience, and improve the patient experience with their provider.
Solutions that leverage patient-inputted medical history to enhance the patient-provider experience

Solving the DNA delivery challenge
Tags
When DNA was first recognized as the code of life, it was predicted that we might one day rewrite this code to overcome disease and other ailments. But, more than 60 years later it’s clear that writing DNA code is only half of the puzzle. DNA must be read in a cell before its power can be unwound. The other half of the puzzle is DNA delivery itself, which continues to be a huge obstacle for all branches of life sciences.
Synthetic Virus Technologies Inc. was founded to finally make effective DNA delivery a reality. Our unique technology is based on self-assembling DNA nanotechnology that brings together previously incompatible advances in non-viral smart drug delivery. Stepwise assembly of our liposome “bubble” vehicles allows for tailored delivery through multiple membrane barriers like the blood brain barrier or to the nucleus of the cell.
Our first product is a smart drug delivery kit for the research academic market that will make the delivery of DNA plasmids, chromosomes and genomes into living cells possible.

Our dedicated team of engineers, medical doctors, and clinical scientists is currently working on Tenomix’s flagship device, which autonomously searches for lymph nodes in resected cancer tissues and marks their locations for efficient extraction.
This bench-top device replaces the existing tedious and unreliable manual lymph node finding process and greatly improves the speed and reliability of the cancer staging process. This enables clinicians to make better-informed treatment decisions, resulting in fewer patient complications and fatalities and ensures hospitals continuously meet their quality metrics.

Easy test to measure blood clotting
Tags
Thrombin generation is an overall blood clotting test, but it is not used clinically because the testing needs to be done in a specialized laboratory.
12 Squared has developed a novel test kit to measure thrombin generation at the point‐of care (POC‐TG). The Test kit consists of i) the recombinant sensor protein that is produced by bacteria, ii) a pre‐alpha device that is purchased from an optics company, and iii) an activator (cheap chemical). The only difference for each indication is software programming. POC‐TG can be useful in number of clinical scenarios. We have been developing four indications:
A) Hemophilia Factor Measurement: The worldwide market for hemophilia products is about $3 billion. POC‐TG testing will result in the more rationale use of replacement clotting factors, resulting in less overall use.
B) Diagnosis of Hemophilia in the Developing World: The World Federation of Hemophilia has a call for proposals to diagnose hemophilia in remote location. POC‐TG can do this.
C) Testing for Direct Oral Anticoagulants (DOACS): DOACs (Xarelto, Eliquis, Pradaxa, Savaysa) are a $20 billion market. POC‐TG can test for the presence of these drugs, but the cut‐offs are different for each drug. Thus POC‐TG testing could be used to market a specific drug as being safe.
D) Guiding bleeding management during complex surgery: POC‐TG will be able to guide in the treatment of patients undergoing complex surgery (bypass‐pumps, liver transplant etc.).
