The Chanchlani Research Centre is dedicated to understanding the genetic and environmental causes of common diseases among diverse cultural groups, women and the socially disadvantaged while providing innovative training to the next generation of health researchers.

Escarpment Cancer Research Institute (ECRI) brings together well-established and successful cancer research groups, as well as emerging groups, from McMaster University, Hamilton Health Sciences, and the Juravinski Cancer Centre. ECRI will be a national leader of innovative and sustainable solutions that will put research into action for the benefit of people affected by cancer.

The Institute has three core programs of research: Clinical Trials, Quality Health Care and Knowledge Translation (‘bench to bedside’) research

Since its foundation in 2013, the Geriatric Education and Research in Aging Sciences (GERAS Centre) has emerged as an international leader in fractures, frailty, and dementia research.

We are at the forefront of several innovative research initiatives focused on maximizing the resilience of vulnerable older adults. With our rapidly aging population, and with more people living with chronic disease, our work has never been more important. We have been working hard towards our goal to enable people to age with dignity and independence.

The Centre, based out of St. Peter’s Hospital (SPH) in Hamilton, aims to advance health care through education and research. This aim is operationalized by linking research, practice, and education to realize point-of-care improvements for seniors.

Strong partnerships with the St. Peter’s Centre for Healthy Aging, the Health TAPESTRY primary care initiative, Osteoporosis Canada, Medical Pharmacies Group Ltd., and many others support the success of the GERAS Centre’s activities.

Officially established in 2017, GUIDE is an academic group providing methodological support to clinical practice guidelines developers. The group is comprised mostly of critical care physicians and experts in the field of clinical practice guideline development and systematic reviews.

GUIDE is comprised of experts in the field of clinical practice guideline development and systematic reviews, mostly, critical care clinicians with methodology expertise. Guide experts can provide methodological support to your guideline development and other evidence synthesis, and conduct onsite or remote education and training.

GUIDE trainees are mentored under our expert methodologists and are offered opportunities to participate in a variety of activities; including various stages of the guideline development process, educational activities, and other methodological projects.

Since its inception, the Hamilton Centre for Kidney Research (HCKR) has become one of the premier research centres in Canada combining expertise in both basic science and clinical research. Our mandates are to translate our world class biomedical research into clinical practice to prevent and treat progressive kidney disease in children and adults across all walks of life, and to define best approaches to treat kidney disease and its complications.

In affiliation with the Division of Nephrology, HCKR members investigate key aspects of kidney function and disease, including fundamental and translational research in hypertension, vascular calcification, glomerulonephritis, transplant rejection, diabetic nephropathy, genetic studies of chronic kidney disease and complications of dialysis. The resulting genetic targets and seminal discoveries uncovered by researchers at the HCKR represent the foundation for the development of novel medicines and treatment approaches for chronic kidney disease and its complications.

Encompassing an array of technologies, disciplines and specialties, the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Pain Research and Care (IPRC) is exploring the causes of a number of different types of pain, developing new strategies for its prevention, diagnosis and management, and innovative care for patients.

The institute places a special emphasis is on thalamic pain. This type of pain is centred in the thalamus of the brain and may cause sufferers to experience numerous forms of discomfort. Michael DeGroote himself has suffered from a severe form of thalamic pain after experiencing a stroke.

The LIVE (Large Interactive Virtual Environment) Lab is a unique 106-seat Research Performance Hall designed to investigate the experience of music, dance, multimedia presentations, and human interaction.

The space includes Active Acoustic Control; Sound Recording Equipment; and measurement of Behavioural Responses, Movement (motion capture), Brain Responses (EEG), Muscle Tension (EMG), Heart Rate, Breathing Rate, and Sweating Responses (GSR).

The aims include:

• A neuroscientific understanding of how performers interact, what moves audiences during a performance, and the cognitive, social and emotional impact of these experiences;
• Incorporating technology and real-time audience feedback into creative performances;
• Development and evaluation of new technologies for health (e.g., hearing aids, dance for Parkinson’s) and artistic expression;
• Neuroscientific evaluation of human responses (e.g., market research; defining important aspects of culture) and what makes for successful human interactions (e.g., educational techniques, group problem solving).

Research in the LIVELab is aimed both at theoretical understanding and applications to business, health, education public policy, and artistic creation.

Researchers at the McMaster Child Health Research Institute are looking beyond medical treatments of individual conditions to explore the deeper connections between childhood illness and long-term health. McMaster University is a recognized leader in aging research, and is building on its infrastructure and expertise in this area through the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA).

MIRA was created to stimulate and facilitate interdisciplinary research in aging, as well as to develop innovative educational programs for students within the academic and clinical realms. The Medical Imaging Informatics Research Centre at McMaster University (MIIRC@M) is the result of efforts of the radiologists at Hamilton Health Sciences, and the researchers and scientists at McMaster University and the University of Waterloo, along with other prestigious Canadian and International universities.

MIIRC@M brings together radiologists and engineers in order to bridge the gap between clinical studies and computer sciences and to solve specific issues in Medical Imaging. Its goal is to provide a nurturing environment to the researchers interested from McMaster or other institutions, match the adequate skills and resources, and facilitate access to grants and industry partnerships.

MIIRC@M’s vision is to foster seamless integration of medical images in the daily world of healthcare professionals with appropriate delivery of relevant content and decision support, and to educate the new world of imaging and Electronic Health Records (EHR) professionals. MIIRC@M seeks to establish McMaster, Ontario and Canada as leaders in image enabling the EHR and driving utility from regional and national imaging infrastructure.

The Michael G. DeGroote National Pain Centre (MGD NPC) was established in 2010 and draws on McMaster’s expertise in evidence-based medicine to identify, collate, review, revise, update and develop clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of chronic pain. Guidelines will then be disseminated, using best practice techniques of knowledge translation.

Mission. The mission of the MGD NPC is to improve the management of pain through the dissemination of best practice information.

Research at the Offord Centre for Child Studies is focused on child development and finding scientific solutions that will improve the lives, health and development of children and youth.

The Centre hosts a multidisciplinary group whose work falls into a number of themes: (1) child mental health and neurodevelopmental disorders; (2) influences on child health and development arising from early experience, families, schools and neighbourhoods; (3) services and interventions for children with mental health needs; and (4) knowledge translation, community connections, and partnerships.

Through collaboration across fields such as child psychiatry, psychology, epidemiology, pediatrics, policy development, social work, and nursing, the Centre’s aim is to better understand children’s mental health problems with the overall goal of improving the lives of children and youth.

Program for Health Economics and Outcome Measures (PHENOM) is an academic research group that is aimed to support clinical and coverage decision making through collecting and synthesizing evidence. Our primary approach to generating new evidence is randomized clinical trials, observational studies, and population preference elicitation.

We also use systematic literature review, meta-analysis and economic modeling for synthesizing existing evidence. Our research can be used to address individual clinical and/or economic questions and to support coverage policy making. We are actively involved in educational activities related to research methodology for graduate training and knowledge exchange in health economics and patient-reported outcome measures.

The Programs for Assessment of Technology in Health (PATH) Research Institute was established in 2003, led by the world renowned Bernie O’Brien, and a group of researchers, including Ron Goeree, the current Director of PATH. PATH is based at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, but has strong affiliations with McMaster University as well. The PATH Research Institute conducts and promotes evidence-based evaluations of the effectiveness and efficiency of new and existing health care technologies.

Over the years, both groups had contributed heavily in guiding the healthcare expenditures of our federal and provincial governments.

PATH has extensive expertise in conducting literature reviews, evidence synthesis, biostatistics, economic evaluation, costing, budget impact analysis, decision analytic modelling, policy analysis, health systems impact analysis, and techniques of research translation and knowledge uptake for new policy formation. PATH is particularly well suited to assist program, service and policy makers, at all levels of decision making, in making difficult decisions about efficient and equitable health care resource utilization.

The Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy (CCEM) is located at McMaster University and was opened in 2004. Since 2014, CCEM is funded by the Major Science Initiatives (MSI) program as one of 17 national research facilities in Canada. CCEM houses best-in-class electron and ion microscopes; a team of 13 full-time professional expert staff operate the facility, perform microscopy services, and train users. CCEM has a diverse, national user base of more than 500 users annually. The research published by CCEM users has steadily grown to more than 140 peer-reviewed journal articles annually. CCEM serves users from academia and industry, from all over Canada and internationally. The research projects range from biology to chemistry, geology, and engineering.

CCEM features a state-of-the-art suite of instrumentation and experienced, dedicated staff capable of getting the best out of each instrument. Our goal is to enable our users and partners to solve tomorrow’s material problems for a brighter world.

The Thrombosis & Atherosclerosis Research Institute (TaARI) is located in the David Braley Research Institute, which they share with the Population Health Research Institute (PHRI) .

The core research programs at TaARI include:

• The Experimental Thrombosis and Atherosclerosis (ETA) Program, which conducts fundamental research on the interplay of thrombosis and inflammation in the context of thrombosis, atherosclerosis, diabetes, cancer, and sepsis.
• The Clinical Thromboembolism Program (CTP), which performs optimal prevention, diagnosis and treatment of patients with thrombotic problems, translating current research into clinical practice.
• The Comparative Medicine Group, which supports the research of an interdisciplinary group of faculty veterinarians, physicians, and basic scientists who study animal models of human disease. The research is dedicated to the enhancement of human and animal health via research, training and services.
